Towards the end of October, the ‘triathlon’ (Multisport?) season kicked off for many at the State Duathlon. Held at Kwinana Motorplex, it was a new experience for the large majority, except a handful that had competed in the Uni Games ITT and TTT a couple years ago. Many were skeptical going into the event, but both the run course and the bike course offered something unique and different. The wind and short steep climbs made conserving energy on the first run difficult, but it was less mentally difficult than a standard out and back. The windy and wet conditions made for a tough slog on the bike, but the smooth, wide roads definitely make it a course for quick cycling on a dry day. As is usually the case, the UWA crew were out in force, with 11 members punching out a quick race and achieving great results. Special mentions to:

  • Tommaso and David, who are showing ominous signs for the State Schools Triathlon in November, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the 14-15 Short Course, with Tommaso clocking the fastest short course time overall.
  • James Allen for dominating all age groups in the Long Course, not just the 20-24 category, claiming State Champion status after an unfortunate puncture all but robbed him of last year’s title.
  • Lottie for getting back up after hitting the ground hard on the bike and still claiming 3rd in the 14-15 Long Course. Another junior who is sure to put in a big performance at the State Schools Triathlon.
  • Alex for once again displaying a dominant bike run combination to cruise to State Champion status in the 30-34 Long Course.
  • Luke, Nick and Justin, who all raced in the competitive Open Male category; Nick and Luke managing to grab the minor podium placings.
  • Alberto for clocking the fastest run splits in his age group to pick up 2nd place.

With November here, the season really starts the heat up, with the School Sport WA Triathlon Champs kicking off the proceedings at the beginning of the month, and the prestigious Interclub Champs falling in the final week. As well as this, those who are racing in the Busso Ironman and 70.3 will be clocking some big hours and throwing down some final prep before the big day arrives at the start of December.

Bring it on!
