The Presidential Platform

Hi everyone,

I hope your training is going well - the days are getting longer, and we are starting to see glimpses of a glorious summer on its way. I can't wait for a bit more sunshine!

On Thursday , UWA Sports held the annual UWA Sports award dinner which is to recognise all of the people and volunteers involved with UWA Sports. The Tri Club managed to fill a table and those who went enjoyed a lovely meal. Thanks to Alex and Daniel we also put through a nomination for Champion Club. Of course there can only be one winner which was the Judo club this year who rattled off an amazing list of achievements worthy of the title Champion Club, but the best part for me was reading the application that we put forth and reflecting over the incredibly successful season of performances from a number of individuals last year. These have already been called out but it's going to be a tough season to follow!

The WA State Duathlon Champs were held a couple of weeks ago with some great results for UWATC including second overall to Nick Thompson. See below for a write up from Nick about the event on behalf of everyone.

This Sunday saw the first TWA swap meet held at the rooftop at the Mezz in Mt Hawthorn. An interesting proposition given the rise of Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace but sure enough there were some great bargains to be had. I even managed to NOT buy the set of Zipp 404s that i was really keen on. (I was that close!)

As with any first time event, you can never be sure how it will turn out and it would have been great to have some more people come through but we were supporting the sporting association and it was a great chance to move some gear on. Many thanks to Nick Thompson, Adrian & Sarah, and Phil for getting down there early and setting up the tent, and to all those who provided gear to Nick who organised all of the club participation in the event.

Don't forget the club has organised transition sessions in place of the next few wind trainer sessions until November 20th (5:30am @ Human Movement). These sessions will be focused specifically on skills appropriate to the new triathlon season so get down and tune up those skills! Please speak to Grant or Adrian Hobson if you have any queries. Everyone is welcome and, regardless of level, everyone will get something out of it. Only three remain so talk to Adrian to arrange a pro-rata fee for the remaining three sessions.

Most critically we want all club members to enter the "Club Champs" aka Peninsula Personal Injury Lawyers Mandurah State Interclub Championship. SUNDAY 25th NOVEMBER. It's a sprint distance Tri held in Mandurah/Halls head and mission critical will be to ensure we have at minimum 20 club members racing on the day to put us in contention for the cup.  The last few years we have been successful in a 2nd and 3rd place, but this will not happen unless we get the numbers down there. This race will have the best atmosphere of all races season, and we will have a BBQ afterward so make sure you are part of it. Sign up for the club series via TWA for discounted entries. See you on Sunday 25th november!

Don't forget if you haven't organised your TWA/UWA membership then that needs to be done too!

Train safe,
Brenden Koh
UWATC President

Sports Nutrition tip from Gaby 💪🍽

Late night snack?

The concept of eating before bedtime has been controversial with several arguments suggesting that a high energy, high carbohydrate snack can lead to weight gain. However, recent research with active participants suggests that consuming a protein-filled snack before bedtime can be beneficial. Researchers from the Florida State University found that consuming ~30g protein from food such as cottage cheese about 30 minutes before sleeping appears to have a positive effect on muscle quality, metabolism and overall health.

My recommendation? If you had a long and intense training session, including a high protein snack before heading to bed can be beneficial for your recovery.

WA State Duathlon Championships 2018 wrap-up, Nick Thompson

See Focused Ninja Photography Facebook page for plenty more photos.

Towards the end of October, the ‘triathlon’ (Multisport?) season kicked off for many at the State Duathlon. Held at Kwinana Motorplex, it was a new experience for the large majority, except a handful that had competed in the Uni Games ITT and TTT a couple years ago. Many were skeptical going into the event, but both the run course and the bike course offered something unique and different. The wind and short steep climbs made conserving energy on the first run difficult, but it was less mentally difficult than a standard out and back. The windy and wet conditions made for a tough slog on the bike, but the smooth, wide roads definitely make it a course for quick cycling on a dry day. As is usually the case, the UWA crew were out in force, with 11 members punching out a quick race and achieving great results. Special mentions to:

  • Tommaso and David, who are showing ominous signs for the State Schools Triathlon in November, finishing 1st and 2nd respectively in the 14-15 Short Course, with Tommaso clocking the fastest short course time overall.
  • James Allen for dominating all age groups in the Long Course, not just the 20-24 category, claiming State Champion status after an unfortunate puncture all but robbed him of last year’s title.
  • Lottie for getting back up after hitting the ground hard on the bike and still claiming 3rd in the 14-15 Long Course. Another junior who is sure to put in a big performance at the State Schools Triathlon.
  • Alex for once again displaying a dominant bike run combination to cruise to State Champion status in the 30-34 Long Course.
  • Luke, Nick and Justin, who all raced in the competitive Open Male category; Nick and Luke managing to grab the minor podium placings.
  • Alberto for clocking the fastest run splits in his age group to pick up 2nd place.

With November here, the season really starts the heat up, with the School Sport WA Triathlon Champs kicking off the proceedings at the beginning of the month, and the prestigious Interclub Champs falling in the final week. As well as this, those who are racing in the Busso Ironman and 70.3 will be clocking some big hours and throwing down some final prep before the big day arrives at the start of December.

Bring it on!
