Hello team!

Looks like we've had lots of excitement since the last monthly newsletter. I'll start with the most recent item.

COVID-19 precautions. The five day mandatory lockdown has been lifted. However, some interim measures have been put into place. The club has decided to follow advice from Triathlon WA and resume the coached training sessions on the week of 15th February. The EnduroFit swimming sessions will recommence the same week.

Steve will share the training sets on our Facebook group as well as organise windtrainer sessions on Tuesday and Thursday morning. You are no longer required to wear a mask if exercising vigorously outside.

The committee really appreciates your support as we make these decisions. We are looking forward to training sessions resuming.

Now here are the other exciting and happy updates.

  • Babies on board. January came with 4 beautiful surprises with Ceri & Howard welcoming Lucas on 29th December; Tash & Luke welcoming their twins Darcy & Paul on 5th January and Sarah and Adrian welcoming William on 28th January. Congratulations to all, we are so happy for you and looking forward to meeting these 4 potential triathletes. 
  • Club champs. Thank you to all of you who participated at Club Champs on 10th January and congratulations to Nick for putting a solid effort finishing first overall. It was great to see so many people participating and being part of a race full of enthusiastic people.
  • Tri-Active Program. There's one spot left for this program commencing with an info session on 14 February. Thank you all for sharing the information encouraging people to give tri a try.
  • Student rep. We are very excited to welcome Jonney Sammut as a UWA Triathlon Club member as well as our new student representative in the committee. We are grateful with Oggi for the fantastic job he's done and for agreeing to stay as part of the committee.
  • Well done at Rockingham! Even though the event became an aquathlon instead of a triathlon, our club members had a stellar performance. Congratulations to Jonney for coming first overall, to Rebecca Puccini for being selected as part of the School Sport WA team and to Tomasso for debuting in the elite category!

I'm testing this new bullet point format, let me know if you like it more =).

Hopefully I'll see you soon!

Why a little discipline goes a long way

Jocko Willink is a decorated Navy SEAL and bestselling author. Eliud Kipchoge is the greatest marathoner in the world. The two men ply their trades in different fields and on different continents and are separated by at least 100 pounds. But their respective success is rooted in a shared practice: discipline.

2021 Triathlon Australia Anti-Doping Policy

Triathlon Australia has recently approved it’s 2021 Anti-Doping Policy which came into effect on January 1st, 2021. Moving forward the Triathlon Australia Anti-Doping Policy is now the Australian National Anti-Doping Policy. It is important that all members understand their obligations under the new policy. Changes include a new anti-doping rule violation of retaliation, a category of athletes that is lower-level and flexibility related to sanctioning for certain levels of athletes/participants. Read More >>

IRONWOMAN Research Trial

Cory Dugan, PhD scholar at the University of Western Australia is currently investigating the relationship between iron deficiency and exercise performance in exercising females, as well as the effect of iron supplementation on exercise capacity.

There is a need to raise awareness towards the impact of iron deficiency on exercise performance (given the extremely high prevalence rates in female athletes).

He recently attended the Giant Mandurah 28th State Interclub Championship Triathlon event. They screened 60 females for both iron deficiency and anaemia via a simple questionnaire in conjunction with a fingerprick blood test (for the purpose of measuring haemoglobin concentration). Approximately 20% of those females were screened to be potentially anaemic and required follow up blood tests.

All about... Jonney Sammut!

1.   Tell us about yourself?

Hello fellow club members and newsletter readers! My name is Jonathan Sammut and I am very honoured to be UWATC’s student rep for 2021. For those that don’t know me, I am an avid triathlete that loves to travel and race in new places and have been doing so up until the onset of the COVID panorama. Other than a triathlete, I am struggling student studying a bachelor of commerce at UWA majoring in management and marketing. When I’m not studying, I am either working at Scarborough Pool, training or trying to play the drums!

2.    How did you start in triathlon and when did you join the club?

I started triathlon through my fitness fanatic Dad who also loves to swim, bike and run. I would beg him to take me to his races before I was old enough to compete myself. I joined UWATC only recently after being exposed to the lovely people and training group through my close friends Nick and Oggi. I have loved coming to the sessions and the supportive training environment makes it that much easier to go out and push your limits.

3.    What do you enjoy most about the sport?

The main reason I enjoy triathlon is the diversity it brings to my life. Not only am I able to keep fit, set goals and lead a healthy lifestyle. I am also able to meet new like minded people who share a common interest in fitness and health.

4.    Favourite leg and why?

My favourite leg would have to be the swim. There is something really rewarding I find from doing a long swim session in the pool and feeling like you can eat whatever you want after you finish!

5.   Best triathlon tip

The best triathlon tip I would have for anyone that is looking to achieve crazy goals in the sport is to be patient and to enjoy the ride, stop comparing yourself to others and focus on what you need to do.

6. What’s your next goal?

My next goal is now Karri Valley Triathlon. Into the future I hope to racing internationally again!
