The Presidential Platform

Hello team!

The long weekend welcomed us with some fantastic news. Restrictions to the two person gathering rules are being relaxed with the limit rising to 10 people. Please note that, as advised by TWA, the 1.5 m distancing rule still applies so please exercise this measures with precaution when training out there.

We are excited to announce that the online training sessions have been formalised. You are now able to register to the Zoom Windtrainer sessions with Grant and get a weekly running set for you to complete on your own too. Options for members, non-members and families are available. Registration and more information here

If you are running out of creativity and would like more direction, you can always contact a Triathlon Australia Accredited Coach such as Grant, Charles or Alison to get a personalised training program. If you are looking for something less specific, UWA  also has online workouts for you to follow.

We are having the club's first ever online AGM, please join us to this historical moment on Saturday 23 May at 4.00 pm. All positions are open for nomination and we always welcome enthusiastic individuals wanting to contribute to the club. Scroll down to find out more about this and many other ways you can support our club.

Last but not least, we are still hopeful we will be able to have our club camp. We will try and tie it a few weeks before Busselton 70.3 in October so make sure you continue training over winter! We will keep you updated with more details once we have more information.

Keep the good work going, team!

UWA’s Professor Toby Richards shares his insight on COVID-19 treatment

This article is not directly related to triathlon but we didn't want to miss the opportunity to showcase our UWATC member, Professor Toby Richards, and the fantastic work he is doing leading the UWA's COVID-19 Clinical trial.  Read more about it here.

If you have any recent discoveries you would like to share with the club just send them through!

All about... Adrian Hobson!

1. How did you start in triathlon and when did you join the club?

I did my first “multisport” “race” when I was in year 12 at boarding school, I was meant to be studying for exams but heard over the radio that there was a local race run by Rhodes University happening that afternoon. So I grabbed my running shoes, borrowed an old bike and bunked out for the afternoon. It was R10 entry, equivalent to about AU$1.00

I started getting into triathlon here in Perth while studying. I needed an out from studies so I started swimming a few laps at the UWA Pool, bought my bike on gumtree and started to learn how to ride the road bike. My first triathlon was the Coogee Beach Triathlon, and I couldn’t figure out how to change down from the big chain ring, it was a long day out and my rugby shorts gave me terrible chafe on the run. Since then I’ve learned a lot, and joining the UWATC in 2013 (I think?) definitely fast-tracked my skills and fitness.

2. What do you enjoy most about the sport?

It changes quite often, sometimes it’s the freedom of just getting out there and going for a hills ride or ocean swim, sometimes it’s being in the hurt locker, sometimes it’s the sense of achievement, sometimes it’s getting that “so tired feeling”, and as an added bonus being part of UWATC - there’s always someone willing to join in!

3. Favourite leg and why?

Run off the bike, it’s at that stage of the race when everyone is feeling the pinch, and I like it! Physicality doesn’t matter so much anymore, it’s the mental game - especially in the longer races.

4. Best triathlon tip?

Fitness takes time, and with fitness comes speed. Don’t rush.

5. What’s your next goal?

I was working up to Shoalwater Classic OD to be my big hurrah this season, but that got cancelled. So… maybe Busso IM70.3 in October. That means some solid and consistent winter training to build up the base again.
