Hello team!

I have a few important announcements so make sure to read until the end!

Grant has let the committee know that he would like to take some time off from coaching, so he can spend more time with his family. We all know how Grant encourages us to put our family and wellbeing as a priority, so we completely understand and support his decision.

Grant will continue his swim coaching role through UWA Sport in the mornings for the near future but will stop coaching the running and cycling sessions. Grant is a Life Member of the UWA Triathlon Club and whilst we know he is taking a well-earned rest, we reckon he will be back some time in the future.

The committee is already in conversation with our potential new coach. We hope we will be able to share more information with you in the coming weeks. It is likely these changes will also include an increase to the number of training sessions the club offers for those targeting training in a high-performance triathlon squad, so keep an eye out for the updates!

In the meantime, Grant will continue to coach the Wednesday running sessions at McGillivray and the Thursday windtrainer sessions via Zoom for the remainder of August with the new coach and training sessions likely to commence in September.

Grant has been a pillar for the UWA Triathlon Club and we are grateful for the contributions he has made to the club over the last 20 years. We are planning on having a farewell after his last training session.

Our first fundraiser event for the season is happening this Sunday! Thank you to Phil for organising this and thank you to all of you for raising your hand and volunteering. Make sure to stop by and buy a snag if you get a chance.

There was a mistake on the date for the club camp on the Facebook event. The club camp is happening from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th September. We are confident it will be another great weekend full of quality training and great fun so we look forward to seeing many of you there.

These are the big announcements for now. Make sure to contact me if you have any questions or suggestions on things you would like to see different. You know I’m always up for a coffee ðŸ˜

It is great to see so many people swimming, cycling, and running despite the days being so cold and wet recently. Racing season is about to officially start with Exceed’s Duathlon on the 16th of August so let’s keep the good work going!

I’ll see you out there!

Gaby Villa
President UWA Triathlon Club

Thank you Grant!

Grant Landers is the only qualified High-Performance Triathlon Coach (Level 3) across Western Australia. He has coached athletes of all levels and abilities including elite world champions, national champions, junior medallists and paratriathletes.

He currently teaches within the School of Sport Science at the UWA. His research interests include endurance exercise in the heat and recovery from high intensity exercise. Grant’s coaching has been recognised with an Australian University Sport Coach of the Year award and by the Department of Sport and Recreation through high performance coaching scholarships.

We believe that Grant has made an outstanding contribution not only to our club, but to the sport of triathlon in general. We are incredibly grateful for all these years he has been our coach. We will miss seeing him on the field with his unique training style but are sure his lessons will stay with us for a very long time.

Tyson, Lucas, Lilly and Holly are very lucky!

What does the science say? ï¤“

Twin study shows environment plays a key role in our physical activity capability

The benefit and physical gain people experience from particular types of exercise routines such as endurance or resistance training is more dependent on environmental factors such as lifestyle and diet rather than genetics, according to a team of sport science researchers at The University of Western Australia including our very own Channa Marsh.

“To put it another way, despite the size of your engine being partly dependent on your genes, your ability to tune it up is more dependent on environmental factors such as your lifestyle, diet, friends and support groups.”

Ability to push myself and have fun with like minded people, spread positive vibes.

4.    Favourite leg and why?
Well actually started this to get into adventure racing so would probably be the Kayak leg.
