The Presidential Platform
Hi team! (first one from me )
Triathlon has been part of my life for more than 10 years and I’m grateful for all the amazing people who have crossed my path while practising this wonderful sport. Being part of the UWA Triathlon Club has been one of the biggest highlights from my time living in Perth. Today, I feel honoured to have been nominated and chosen as the Club’s new president.
I know I have a big responsibility ahead but, when thinking of the fantastic committee we have, I feel confident we have a fabulous year to come. I want to thank Brenden for the excellent job he has done leading the club over the past 8 years and for his ongoing participation as part of the committee.
Before the end of this month the committee will have its strategic meeting where we’ll set our plan and goals for the upcoming season. Please feel free to email me if you have any comments or suggestions you would like us to consider as part of this meeting.
Remember that from 1st July onwards club members will have reduced training fees, so make sure to register as a club member to start enjoying this benefit. Those of you who are already subscribed, should've already received an email from Adrian subscribing you to the new plan.
We have included a new section in the newsletteer "All about me". For you to get to know your training mates a bit more. Thank you to James for volunteering for the first one.
It’s been great to see that, despite the days getting colder and darker, training numbers are still on the rise. Thank you to our coach Grant for keeping us motivated, active and looking forward to the lovely shoe-kicking sets. Also, don’t forget to have good lights on when riding to ensure you are safe and visible in these darker days.
Layer up and keep rolling,
Gaby Villa
President UWA Triathlon Club
Sports Nutrition tip from Gaby
Vegetarian diet and exercise performance
A recent study compared the exercise capacity of vegan, lacto-ovo-vegetarian and omnivorous recreational runners. All three groups showed similar maximal exercise capacity after performing a test on a bicycle ergometer. These results indicate that well-balanced vegan or vegetarian diets can be suitable alternatives for recreational runners.
If you have any questions or you would like advice specific to your goals, feel free to email me at gaby.lnb@gmail.com .

All about... James Allen
- Tell us about yourself?
I’m the student representative of the club and I’ve been in this role since 2017.
I study law at UWA and will graduate at the end of this year.
Why did you start triathlon and when did you join the club?
I did cross-country running and swimming when I was in high school and triathlon seemed to be a natural progression. My first triathlon was the school sports qualifier in 2013 and I recall being stoked just to get across the finish line. Ever since then I’ve been hooked!
I joined the club soon after as a part of Grant’s junior squad (as it then was) as I was looking for more focus in training. The sessions were hard (and still are) but helped me to improve vastly and finish my first 70.3 in 2015. I stepped up to the committee in 2016.
What do you enjoy most about the sport?
Most triathletes would attest to the fact that this is a challenging sport; it is often monotonous and not for fair-weather sportspeople. For me, the personal challenge that is presented by triathlon is what is most enjoyable. Tracking improvement over the years and watching those season and personal bests fall is what motivates me to come down to training.
Of course, the camaraderie provided by the club both at training and on race day help me to pursue my goals and are important in finding enjoyment in the sport.
- Favourite leg and why?
The ride with the run in a close second. I find swimming overall monotonous; probably as a result of a permanent case of ‘black-line fever’ and possible PTSD from innumerable golf sessions.
Cycling takes you different places and really allows you to experience the outdoors in a way that running and swimming do not. It’s also much easier on your body than running.
Favourite session?
I would have to say 1km repeats. It’s a good, honest session that requires hitting an optimum pace that is hard but not so hard that you blow up in the sixth km.
Best triathlon tip?
Consistency is key. This applies both to training and to racing. Being consistent with training allows you to get the biggest improvements and is important for achieving a routine. It’s also a good way to ensure that you are adapted to mileage to avoid injury/overtraining.
