The Presidential Platform

Hello team!

We've had some spectacular sunrises recently! Thank you Grant for capturing them while we are too busy looking at the black T at the bottom of the pool ðŸ˜‚

This month has commenced with some exciting changes! We welcomed Steve as our new coach and added more training sessions into our training schedule. It is great to see such a big turn up since day one at the running sessions. Hopefully the cycling sessions will become just as popular as the weather improves.

We appreciate all the hard work Russell has put in the background getting the links up and running for the new training sessions. Please remember to register before attending. We have a 20% discount available for each additional member of the same household. Please email Russell to get this discount organised for you.

We've made some significant changes recently. We are very interested to hear your feedback on them. Please send me an email or message if you have any suggestions or thoughts on the new payment structure and training sessions.

I feel like I've been talking about the club camp for the whole year but it is finally happening!! Please register for it so we can make sure we have enough food organised for the weekend. It is promising to be a great weekend full of training and fun especially for those getting ready for Busso in October.

Now that the season calendar has been announced, the club committee has chosen the races we will focus on this year for our internal club awards. Have a look below to the ones we've chosen and make sure to mark them on your calendar.

Congratulations to Nick for such an stellar performance conquering the Exceed Duathlon on 16 August. Looks like the club is off to a great season start!

I'll see you on the track!

Gaby Villa
President UWA Triathlon Club

Welcome Steve!

Steve is a Triathlon Australia Accredited Performance Coach with a Bachelor of Health & Physical Education and a Masters in Sport Coaching in progress.

Steve brings a breadth of experience into the role. He commenced his coaching career in 2012 and since then he has coached a number of athletes to national titles, national series wins and elite Australian team members in junior and paratriathlete categories. He was awarded WA Coach of the Year in 2018 by Triathlon WA for his outstanding achievements in developing junior triathletes.

Steve moved to Hong Kong in December 2018 to coach the elite national team and after 18 months gaining lots of experience in an elite and international setting, he is back at WA.

We are very excited to welcome Steve on board. We are confident that with this new appointment and training structure, the club will be able to continue to grow and provide an inclusive club environment that is able to cater to all athletes, including those seeking a high-performance path.

What does the science say? ï¤“

Mental fatigue in sport- what is it and how do we recover from it?

Most of us are familiar with the term fatigue; especially as it relates to exercise. We understand how it feels and the consequences it has on how we perform.

There is a significant amount of scientific literature on fatigue as a result of exercise and while often debated, much is known about the mechanisms of fatigue. Mental fatigue, however, is an area of sport science where much less is known, yet has been gaining increasing attention.

All about... Matt Cameron!

1.   Tell us about yourself?

Hi, I’m Matt Cameron. I am a novocastrian boy (Newcastle, NSW) and i moved to Melb for a year then moved to Perth to study at UWA. I am a legally blind athlete who plays for the Australian Blind Cricket team but now looking at some other avenues within the sporting world. I have a rare condition called Usher Syndrome, this is basically hearing loss and retinitis pigmantosa (tunnel vision) combined.

2.    How did you start in triathlon and when did you join the club?

I only started post COVID and joined UWA at the same time, so I’m still learning and training. I do come with a running background so thats one leg down, just gotta work for the other legs.

3.    What do you enjoy most about the sport?

The variety, I haven’t raced yet so I am stuck with the nitty gritty training session but once i get a tandem and a guide, I’m sure the thrill and the challenge of three different aspect of a triathlon race will be a good adrenaline rush.

4.    Favourite leg and why?
Pre first race guess, probably the run, but ask me again after I smash myself swimming and riding before it.

5.    Best triathlon tip?

Don’t swim or run between a blind athlete and their guide... you won't win against a rope.

6. What’s your next goal?

Honestly for now, finishing a race, as a starter I haven’t had the experience yet so i would like to just finish the race... or at least the swim leg.
